Education, Youth and Sports

The Education, Youth and Sport Unit primarily assists in the formulation and implementation of policies on education in the Assembly within the framework of national policies and guidelines. It also has an advisory role in the Assembly on matters relating to pre-school, primary, special school, basic education, youth and sports, development or organization and library services at the district level in the District and other matters that may be referred to it by the Assembly. The department also encourages and reports on implementation of policies and matters relating to basic education in accordance with report format provided by the minister. The department harmonizes the activities and functions of the following agencies at the district level; The Ghana Education Service, Youth Council, Sports Council, Sports Council; and the Library Board

Education, Youth and Sports

The core function of the Directorate is to implement the mission of Ghana Education Service and curriculum. It has been the responsibility of the Directorate to ensure good quality education, access to education and equitable distribution and/or the provision of school infrastructure by playing the following functions:

  • Developing development plans in order to set the development agenda for education in the District through needs assessment.
  • Monitoring the trend of growth of education in terms of academic performance.
  • Meeting the needs of education in the District by collecting and analyzing data on educational activities.
  • Overseeing equitable distribution of teaching and non-teaching personnel in the District.
  • Planning and implementation of training programmes and workshops such as INSETS.
  • Training in the use of education intervention programmes and techniques such as TCAI.
  • Ensuring the maximization and efficient use of available Human Resources for education delivery within the District.
  • Ensuring good school environment, gender and geographical equality in terms of access and quality of education in the District.
  • Coordinating the activities of private schools and other education related activities undertaken by NGOs and individuals within the District.
  • Supervision of teaching and learning in all schools through regular monitoring.
  • Appraising and recommending teachers due for promotion.
  • Preparation of budgets and action plans for implementation.
  • Ensuring proper functioning of SMCs/PTAs and School Boards.
  • Conducting regular payroll audits in schools to streamline staffing.
  • Supervising the distribution of logistics and study materials to schools.
  • Coordinating and supervising activities of special needs educators in the District
